Duties
The Criminal Investigation Unit (CIU) is staffed by 2 full-time detectives along with a part time detective and serves as the investigative branch of the Laurel Police Department. It is the mission of the CIU to conduct follow-up investigations of crimes initially investigated by patrol officers and to perform investigations of serious felonies such as homicide, rape, robbery, and drug trafficking.

The CIU also provides support service to the department’s other divisions. Examples of these services include latent fingerprint processing, photography, interview assistance, polygraph examination, and crime scene investigation.
